Illinois State University Hockey is excited to announce the commitment of Daniel O’Shea to the Redbird program.
O’Shea chose Illinois State for the opportunity to continue both his education and hockey career at the same time. “I can get a really good education and continue my hockey career,” O’Shea said. He plans to major in Business.
Before committing to Illinois State, O’Shea played with the Chicago Reapers 18U AAA program, where he developed into a versatile player capable of playing both forward and defense. A left-shot skater at 5-foot-11, O’Shea brings flexibility to the lineup along with a steady, reliable game.
A big part of O’Shea’s development comes from the people who helped him along the way. He credits coach Jan Hedja for pushing his game forward. “He helped me improve my game the most,” O’Shea said.
He also points to his family as his biggest support system. Off the ice, O’Shea comes from a big family with four siblings: Claire, Liam, Elise, and Emma, and says buffalo chicken is his go-to meal.
“My dad and grandpas are my biggest supporters,” he said.
O’Shea has had key moments throughout his career, including assisting on a game-winning goal against nationally ranked Bishop Kearney. Still, some of his favorite memories come from the experiences off the ice with his teammates. “All of the out-of-state tournaments with my teammates,” he said.
When asked how he would describe himself, O’Shea kept it simple. “A monkey. I think they live a cool life,” he said.
Looking ahead, O’Shea is focused on making the most of both sides of the student-athlete experience. “Getting a degree while playing hockey at the same time is my focus,” he said.
With versatility, a strong support system, and a team-first mindset, O’Shea is ready to make his mark with the Redbirds.
