Illinois State University Hockey is proud to announce the commitment of forward Raymond “RJ” Alvarado to the Redbird program.

A Bloomington, Illinois native, Alvarado will stay close to home as he continues his academic and athletic career at Illinois State. The opportunity to compete at the collegiate level while pursuing a quality education made ISU the right fit.

“I grew up in Bloomington so I know the area pretty well,” Alvarado said. “I’m able to get a great education at a good cost and still continue playing hockey, so it just made sense.” Alvarado plans to major in Finance.

Prior to Illinois State, Alvarado played junior hockey where he developed into a reliable two- way forward. During the 2023–24 season, he appeared in 44 games, totaling 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points. His consistent production and high compete level highlight the type of impact player he can be at the next level.

Alvarado brings a relentless style of play to the Redbirds lineup. “I’d be a shark,” Alvarado said. “They’re always moving, relentless, and smart.”

He credits longtime coach Tompkins as a key influence in his development. “I’ve had him as a coach for many years and I always liked his coaching style, but he’s also a great guy off the ice and has a good relationship with his players.”

Alvarado also points to his father as his biggest supporter throughout his hockey career. “From traveling to being the wallet so I can play, he’s always been there,” he said. Alvarado enjoys BBQ, especially ribs, and has two older sisters, Leia and Andrina.

While he doesn’t point to a single defining moment on the ice, Alvarado values the experiences hockey has provided. “The best hockey memory I’ve had is just traveling all over, experiencing new places, and doing new things.”

He looks forward to both the academic and athletic opportunities ahead at Illinois State. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, getting a degree, playing hockey and having fun while I’m here.”

With strong local ties, proven production, and a relentless mindset, Alvarado is set to make an immediate impact for the Redbirds.
