Ryan Badger will continue both his education and hockey career at Illinois State University, choosing a school that checked all the boxes academically, athletically, and personally.
For Badger, the decision came naturally.
“I chose Illinois State because I liked the size of the campus, I wasn’t too far from home, my AP credits transferred over very well, and I was able to continue playing hockey.”
At Illinois State, he plans to study Exercise Science in the Applied Health Sciences program while continuing his development with the Redbirds. According to his EliteProspects profile, Badger has experience playing both forward and defence, giving him the versatility to contribute in a variety of roles.
As he reflects on his hockey journey, Badger points to one coach who played a significant role in helping him reach this point.
“My favorite coach I have ever had was Nick Pollos because I had him for four years and he pushed me to become the best player I could.”
That guidance, combined with the unwavering support of his family, helped him earn the opportunity to play collegiate hockey.
“Throughout my entire playing career, my parents have always been my biggest supporters.”
He also has a sister, Nora, who has been part of his support system along the way.
Badger’s playing career has featured several memorable milestones. The biggest goal he has scored came in dramatic fashion—an overtime championship winner in St. Louis. When asked about his favourite hockey memory, however, he chose winning the NAPHL Championship this past season. Before that title run, his most unforgettable performance was scoring six goals on Mother’s Day.
Off the ice, Badger enjoys spending time with others and values the relationships he builds. If he could be any animal, he says he would be a dog because he enjoys being around people and loves interacting with others.
Looking ahead to college life, Badger is excited for more than just the competition.
“The thing I look forward to most is meeting new people and building new relationships away from home.”
And when it comes to food, one choice stands above the rest: tacos.
With his commitment now official, Badger is set to begin an exciting new chapter at Illinois State, where he’ll pursue his degree, continue competing at the collegiate level, and make the most of every opportunity both on and off the ice.
