Illinois State University Hockey is excited to announce the commitment of defenseman Hunter O’Neal to the Redbird program.
O’Neal was drawn to Illinois State because of the culture being built within the team and the mindset of the group. “The culture. Building around a core that wants to win and work hard every day,” O’Neal said.
He plans to major in Exercise Science while continuing his hockey career at the collegiate level. Looking ahead, his goals at Illinois State are clear. “Winning a national championship.”
Before committing to Illinois State, O’Neal spent time with the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals and the West Bend Power in the NA3HL, where he developed into a dependable, physical defenseman. During the 2023–24 season, he played in 64 games with the Jr. Admirals, putting up 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points while bringing consistency on the defensive side of the puck.
O’Neal already has a strong connection to the program, as his brother Connor is currently a member of the Illinois State D1 team, making the opportunity to join the Redbirds even more meaningful.
A big part of O’Neal’s development comes from the people who have pushed him along the way. He credits coach Matt Murray for helping shape both his game and his mindset. “He pushed me my hardest while also teaching me along the way and never letting me get down on myself,” O’Neal said.
His parents and sister, Mackenzie, have also been a constant source of support throughout his career. “Any game they could’ve made my entire career, they were there supporting me no matter the score,” he said.
O’Neal has had his share of big moments, including scoring a shootout winner to secure an NIHL championship. One of his favorite memories in hockey was competing at the Fraser Cup Championships with his teammates.
When asked how he would describe himself, O’Neal kept it simple. “Lion. King of the jungle,” he said.
With a physical edge, strong support system, and a team-first mentality, O’Neal is ready to make his mark with the Redbirds.
